50 Years Of curling In Haldimand County

The Haldimand Curling Club has been in operation for more than 50 years. In 1971 a group of dedicated curlers got together and decided to establish a place to curl in Haldimand. Ice time was rented in the old Cayuga Arena and the Cayuga Curling club was born. As word got out, the club grew and became the Haldimand Curling Club. When the new Arena was built in 2011, it was possible to go to five curling sheets on the ice and more curlers were accommodated.

As any curler knows the ultimate sin is to “hog” a rock. The club has set a fine for such transgressions. Over the years the money raised has been donated to several local charities. (including; Children’s Nutrition Network, True Experience, The Royal Canadian Legion and Dementia Inclusive Communities) In addition to curling every Friday night in the winter, the club has hosted several tournaments, or Bonspiels as they are called in curling lingo. The Haldimand Rocks Mixed Bonspiel, held at the Cayuga Arena has attracted curlers from all over Ontario.(unfortunately Haldimand Rocks was suspended because of Covid-19)

The emphasis has always been on the social aspects of the game and having fun. Winning or loosing is secondary. That’s why it is known as the social club that curls. 2021 was the 50th anniversary of the club, but due to COVID-19, HCC celebrated 50 years of curling in 2023.
